WHOIS is a protocol that makes it possible to see the info a specific domain has been registered with through a command line or using special web-based lookup sites. This info includes the names, address and e-mail address of the owner, administrator, technical and billing persons along with the registrar organization the Internet domain has been purchased through, the creation and expiration dates. With the exception of several country-code TLDs that have specific limitations, the WHOIS information of any domain can be changed freely whenever you want, which is quite necessary considering that according to the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details have to be current and valid all of the time. Failure to conform with these policies could lead to losing the ownership of an Internet domain and in many cases a domain might even be deleted from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
